Paolini and Errani: what they give each other
A doubles match after a singles defeat, an underarm serve shared before it was struck, and a first major trophy: this partnership has never been a one-way lesson.

Before Sara Errani delivered an underarm serve on match point against Poland at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, she told Jasmine Paolini what she intended to do. Errani explained the sequence in the press conference afterwards: the message came after the first serve. The opponents faced a surprise; her partner could prepare for what came next.
Paolini had already lost a three-set singles match to Iga Swiatek. She returned with Errani to beat Swiatek and Katarzyna Kawa 7–5, 7–5 and send Italy into the final. A problem she had been tackling alone became a different task shared by two players. It is a useful starting point for understanding this partnership. Errani had experience to offer, but Paolini was bringing something back, including the energy for another match after a draining singles defeat.
The two schedules still intersect in October 2026. On the 17th, Errani and Paolini lost their Wuhan doubles semifinal to Storm Hunter and Katerina Siniakova, 7–5, 5–7, [10–12]. On the 20th, Paolini beat Anhelina Kalinina 6–2, 7–5 in Ningbo singles. Disappointment in one event and an opening in another can occupy the same week. A singles results page alone leaves out a substantial part of Paolini’s working life.
Companionship was already doing a job
Their first tour title together came at Monastir in 2023. In Rome the following year, the unseeded Italians beat four seeded teams on their way to the trophy. Against Coco Gauff and Erin Routliffe in the final, they were 6–8 down in the match tiebreak before taking the last four points. The final score, 6–3, 4–6, [10–8], preserves just how recently the champions had been facing defeat.
At the press conference, Paolini pointed to deciding points and match tiebreaks when explaining the uncertainty of tour doubles. They could have gone out in the opening round, yet finished with the title. The practical value of that experience is less a promise to win every close match than a reason to keep performing the next task. The server still needs a delivery; the partner still needs to be ready for the reply.
Errani’s account to WTA Insider put companionship at the centre of the daily routine. She described the value of having someone nearby to talk to, eat with and enjoy life on tour with, in both singles and doubles. That support exists between results as well as during celebrations. Another tournament changes the court and the draw, but it does not remove the day that two friends can share.
Partnership was already central to Errani’s career. With Roberta Vinci she had won all four women’s doubles majors between 2012 and 2014. Paolini could draw on that history, but a new team still had to make it work with a new player. Errani’s familiar decisions at the net needed to connect with Paolini’s next ball. Experience was something to use together, rather than a collection of titles one partner could lend the other.

Paolini was not only on the receiving end. After their Roland-Garros title in 2025, Errani thanked her for the good energy she brought every day. On the same stage, Paolini credited Errani with helping her become a better player. Their contributions need not be assigned permanently to “knowledge” and “enthusiasm.” The important detail is that the gratitude ran in both directions. The experienced player also had a reason to keep turning up.
One breakthrough year, two different jobs
Before 2024, Paolini had never won a tour-level singles match on grass. At Wimbledon that summer she beat Donna Vekic 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(8) to reach the final. Their 2-hour, 51-minute contest was the longest women’s singles semifinal at the Championships at the time. A month after reaching the Roland-Garros final, Paolini was back in a major title match on a radically different surface.
WTA’s report shows the range within that run. Paolini answered Vekic’s drop shots with lobs and volleys, and turned hard-earned defensive positions into attack when she could set up her forehand. At 4–4 in the second set, a defensive lob was followed by a missed Vekic overhead. Paolini held, then increased her aggression on return. Retrieving the ball and finding the next opportunity were connected parts of the performance.
Those passages cannot quantify how much doubles improved her singles. They do, however, complicate the picture of a player succeeding merely by sending back one more groundstroke. Drawn forward or pushed into defence, she could change height, use the net and look for her forehand again. Shots needed in doubles were also available in singles, with a different amount of court to cover after them.

The Olympic final in Paris that August made the shared responsibility visible in another way. Errani and Paolini came back to beat Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider 2–6, 6–1, [10–7]. WTA described improvements in their groundstrokes and court positioning after the opening set, and highlighted Errani’s lobs and volleys in the deciding match tiebreak.
At Wimbledon, Paolini had faced Vekic’s attacks on her own. In Paris, Errani could help solve the exchanges at the net and overhead. This was resilience carried out by two people with different options. Paolini’s attacking ball could create a position for Errani; Errani’s changes of height and touch could alter the next exchange. The title brought Paolini Olympic gold and completed Errani’s women’s doubles Career Golden Slam.
Not every win followed the same route. After the Beijing final in October, Paolini laughed about failing to hold her own serve in the second set. She explained that the team had returned better, read the opponents’ directions more successfully and stayed engaged through repeated breaks. Rather than wait for one player’s service problems to disappear, they kept finding work they could do together in the next return game.
Switching events has a physical price
The Billie Jean King Cup in November put the benefit and the cost into the same day. Paolini created 16 break points against Swiatek in singles but lost 6–3, 4–6, 4–6. Afterwards, she credited Swiatek with raising her level, especially on serve, at important moments. Having a doubles match still to play did not instantly turn that defeat into something easy to leave behind.
Paolini said she had been in the locker room with the physio, trying to recover quickly. She kept reminding herself to find the energy for the doubles; the Italian team’s support from the bench helped. Counting the two events simply as extra match practice misses that interval. Preparing her body and attention to compete again was part of the work.
The doubles demanded more than a fresh start. The Italians saved three set points in the opener and won six consecutive games from 1–5 in the second set. The underarm serve arrived at the end of that effort. Errani said the choice came from instinct, and that she had told Paolini after the first serve. An improvised decision could still be shared before the ball was struck.
That communication allowed an unusual delivery to fit the team’s preparation. Paolini no longer had to solve every space in the way singles required. Errani made the server’s choice; her partner could prepare for the following task. Their roles were more specific than assigning one player to attack and the other to defend. They concerned the very next ball.

At Roland-Garros in 2025, Errani described a different adjustment to the workload. Playing singles and doubles had become too demanding physically and mentally, and her priority was doubles and mixed doubles. Her singles career ended after qualifying at that event. The partnership with Paolini gave her another centre for continuing her career, rather than a reason to keep carrying every discipline.
The distinction matters. Paolini was maintaining doubles while moving into the biggest singles occasions; Errani was directing more of her resources towards doubles. Success in the same team did not require identical schedules or career plans. One player could expand her opportunities while the other concentrated on the competitions she wanted to keep playing.
The same trophy answered two different careers
In the 2025 Roland-Garros final, they beat Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic 6–4, 2–6, 6–1. It was Paolini’s first major title in any discipline, after reaching the previous year’s singles and doubles finals in Paris and the singles final at Wimbledon. For Errani, doubles continued to offer a present tense at the venue where her singles career had just closed.
The deciding set featured contributions from both sides of the partnership. WTA reported that Paolini’s forehand converted their fourth break point in a long game for a 2–0 lead. Two games later, an Errani forehand caught the netcord and became a winner as the lead grew to 4–0. The names attached to consequential shots alternated. This was not a final in which one player simply carried the other.
Paolini’s thanks focused on Errani’s influence and inspiration. Errani’s thanks focused on the daily energy she received from Paolini. They held the same trophy at different stages of their careers, and had received different things from working together. That makes their words more revealing than a general claim that two friends enjoy playing doubles.

| October 2026, Wuhan and Ningbo | Doubles last four, then singles opening win | Separate results and another preparation |
October 2026 supplies a reminder that accumulated understanding does not win every close finish. In Wuhan, the final match tiebreak went against them. In Ningbo, Paolini turned a 0–5 second-set deficit into 7–5. Folding those opposite outcomes into one measure of confidence is less useful than asking what the next ball required in each setting.
As of 21 October, the official Ningbo draw lists Iva Jovic as Paolini’s next opponent; match status and start time remain subject to the tournament’s updates. In singles, the useful thread is the ball that lets Paolini rebuild an attacking forehand after defence. In doubles, it is also the position Errani can take for the following exchange. Experience passed to Paolini and energy returned to Errani have not made them the same player. They have helped each prepare for a different next job.
