Sonay Kartal beat fifteenth seed Jasmine Paolini 6–2, 6–0 in Wuhan’s last sixteen on October 15. LTA statistics credited her with 28 of 40 return points, or 70%, sustaining pressure throughout Paolini’s service games.
Paolini broke first in the third game. Kartal broke straight back, took the last five games of the opening set and all six of the second: eleven consecutive games to finish the match.
Paolini made 24 unforced errors. Kartal broke three more times in the second set and converted her first match point, producing a 6–0 set for the second match in succession after her win over Belinda Bencic.
It was her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal, following Beijing in 2025, and set up an October 16 meeting with Elina Svitolina.
