Elise Mertens earned her first win over Iga Swiatek with a 7–6(0), 6–3 victory in the 2026 Beijing quarterfinals. WTA’s October 9 semifinal preview reported that Swiatek never earned a break point. The zero in the score records the losing player’s tiebreak points: Mertens won that passage 7–0.

Earlier rounds had been more difficult. Mertens trailed by a break in the deciding set of her opener against Katie Volynets and needed three sets against Jelena Ostapenko. She then defeated Coco Gauff and Swiatek in straight sets, turning a demanding start into a more efficient finish to the quarterfinal stage.

It was her first WTA 1000 semifinal since Dubai in 2021 and the third of her career. She also reached the doubles semifinals with Diana Shnaider, making recovery and the order of commitments practical issues alongside singles progress.

At the October 9 reporting cutoff, Zheng Qinwen was the next singles opponent; Zheng had won their only previous meeting, in Charleston the year before. Mertens’s quarterfinal offers two distinct strengths to examine together: concentrated scoring in the first-set tiebreak and sustained protection of her service games.
