Maja Chwalinska beat Marie Bouzkova 1–6, 6–1, 6–1 in Wuhan’s second round on October 14. After a one-sided opening set, she took twelve of the remaining fourteen games to reach a WTA 1000 last sixteen for the first time.

Her next opponent, Iva Jovic, had arrived by a different route: a first-round bye followed by a 6–4, 6–1 win over Dayana Yastremska. Jovic had played two sets, and the draw brought the pair together for their first tour-level meeting.

Jovic said she had followed Chwalinska’s Roland Garros breakthrough and had practised with her only once or twice. In their subsequent October 15 meeting, Chwalinska won 6–4, 6–1 to reach her first quarterfinal at this level.
