On October 17, 2026, Fonseca said he was shelving his European return to focus on 2027, following discussions with his team after missing the Asian swing.

Joao Fonseca has ended his 2026 season and shifted his attention to next year. Tennis Majors reported on October 17 that he had intended to return in Europe after missing Asia to recover, but decided with his team not to rush back.

He will therefore not defend the ATP 500 title he won in Basel in 2025. Fonseca beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in that final, which remained the biggest title of his career at the time of the report.

His absences began during the summer. He withdrew before his third-round match in Cincinnati, missed the US Open with an abdominal injury, and announced in September that he would also skip the Asian swing, including Tokyo and Shanghai.

The season included his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Monte-Carlo and first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros. Rather than pursue a late-season return, Fonseca said he would prioritize his health and prepare for 2027.
